There is no human Leader, there is no human power capable of opening the door to conquer or dominate my heart, neither with cleverness nor with violence.      J. M. Arizmendiarrieta. Reflections. p. 46

Zarządzanie dobrami

What is the book about

The world is full of managers who have never had a chance to study management. You find them in clinics, governmaental and non-governmental organisations, politics, science, church, schools. I wrote the book for them. I know they have no time to spend long hours studying or reading, so I intruduced them directly to the complexities of management but at the same time, I tried to give them practical tools to handle daily management issues. As a result the book is neither an academic textbook with surplus of unnecessary information nor a simplifying easy-to-use guide "how to be a great manager". I have met hundreds of managers, and I know they deserve more.

How to get the book?

The book is out of print now. Unfortunately much of the examples are out of date as well. So my plan is to rewrite it to fit the needs of particular groups. So far the book was mostly appreciated by superiors and candidates for superiors of religious orders, and they will probably be the first to get their version of the book.

For those who would like to read the book in spite of examples which may be funny today, especially in the areas of administration processes, correspondence, marketing. You may download most of the book by clicking here

Zaszczytny obowiązek

What is the book about?

What happens if a young, just engaged PhD candidate in psychology is called to obligatory military training in a communist country. This one year becomes a one year research project based on participatory observation. The book is in fact a collection of short essays about military training. They are not mere ethnographic descriptions of rituals and regulation or military sub-culture, but they are psychological reflection about human nature which can be better understood in the barracks where like in drophila everything is easily observable.

Doskonalenie umiejętności negocjacyjnych

What is the book about?

The book has a long story. The idea of this form of negociations occured to me when in 1995 Ewa Gorzkowska from the Development and Training Center of  "Solidarity" Regional Office of Lower Silesia asked me to conduct negotiation trainings for "Solidarity" Trade Union leaders. I remember asking her what do the leaders know about strategy, finance, marketing, personnel menegement, labour law, etc. She said "not much" I asked, "How can they negotiate without understanding all the issues?" Nagotiations, for me, are "selling" the problem to the owner of the problem. Owner of the problem is either the person, a group of people who generated the problem or those who have the necessary means of solving the problem. To be able to conduct such a form of negociations the negotiators have to understand very well the domains they deal with. Understanding the reality is one of the first prerequisites to sustainable change. Our cooperation resulted in initiating a two year training in management for the trade unions. Large portions of the materials were later included in my book "Managing the goods", but after many years I have also prepared a new version of the training materials for wider use. So called 'Negotiation tricks" are subject matter of only one training module the rest is devoted to finding real owners of the problems that are at stake.

Pełna partycypacja w zarządzaniu

What is the book about?

Management literature is full of case studies and practitioners-written books giving advice how to be an even better manager. When I noticed that the participants of my management trainings are very attentive to stories written by late CEOs, I went through a whole library of those books. But at a certain point I realized that all these nice and successful guys have a lot in common. They use the same "trick." The book is the discovery and practice of the "trick" we called "total participation", but we are very specific what it means in everyday practice. As I had little time then, I invited my two students Piotr and Grzegorz to help me write the book. We produced a very controversial book, which was selling well enough to encourage the publisher to offer us preparation of the second edition. As there was no other similar book available on the market, we used an English unpublished translation of this book as a textbook in the course: Total Participation in Management. I conducted the course for many years at the Jagiellonian University, Cracow. As the course was conducted in English and was very popular among Erasmus students from Spain and France, they translated it for free to Spanish and French. This is why we offer the book free under Creative Commons licence.

Diagnoza organizacji od A do Z

What is the book about?

The story of the book started in 1992 at a conference at Crete where I became aware of the importance of complex cognitive structures such as scripts or naive theories for the learning processes in a domain. As a certified trainer I would always start my job with "Training needs analysis".  I wanted to know the present concepts regarding trainees' organisation to be able to offer appropriate learning modules leading to change. What started as training needs analysis became organisational diagnosis viewed from the perspective of cognitive structures of the members of an organisation. Some of the structures had clearly pathological character, this is why the title of the first edition of the book was "Organisational pathologies". As in my training career a could repetitevely see the same reoccuring phenomena, I dared to classify them into a "nosological" system which would allow a consultant or a trainer to see how deep and difficult is the reason behind the organisational weakness. As 80% of the book is not devoted to pathologies but to description of diagnostic methods, the publisher convinced me to change the title of the book into more adequate one: "Organisational diagnosis from A to B".

As the book was presented as my habilitation, it went through a sever review process. In the second edition, I tried to incorporate the remarks of my reviewers, except one who stated that authors of books who assume the existence of a norm (in this case a healthy organisation) should be forbidden to be called scientists. In this way I would end up outside of science with all medical sciences. Fortunately for me the majority of Philosophical Faculty of the Jagiellonian University did not share this point of view.
